Conquering Cookies

Today I baked five dozen Death By Chocolate cookies for a church Christmas party without eating a single one. This is a big win for me!

How did I do it? I didn’t bake when I was hungry. I made sure to have a morning smoothie full of nourishing foods — filtered water, banana, boysenberries, beets, spinach, flaxseeds, organic protein powder — so my tummy was full and my body was hydrated to start the day.

I had a satisfying lunch — a large baked potato topped with a lemon-tahini dressing. I’m still full.

I took a homemade cocoa & cashew “Adabar” (like a Larabar but named for my granddaughter Ada) out of the freezer so it would be ready and waiting if/when the chocolate began calling my name.

And then I was ready to bake.

Of course, I could have decided that I wanted to eat cookies. I could have put a couple cookies on a plate, taken off my apron, sat down at the dining room table and slowly savored each gooey, indulgent bite. Two cookies would not have ruined my health or added much to my hips. Two cookies eaten mindfully and with gusto is not a problem. But when two cookies turn into four or six or eight or a cookie every time you pass through the kitchen while they’re cooling on the rack, it adds up.

Some days I do eat cookies.

But today, I was totally satisfied with a couple bites of my “Adabar” and then I put it back in the freezer.

Go me!
